Bernheim welcomes newest male Golden Eagle; See where else he visited

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — While Bernheim Forest is a popular place for Kentuckians and visitors to gather and enjoy nature, turns out rare Golden Eagles also love it as much as humans.

Another male Golden Eagle has chosen Bernheim Forest and Arboretum as it's temporary winter home. Bernheim officials believe he's at least 6 years old and weighs just under nine pounds.

Anyone who wants to vote on the majestic bird's new name can do so here.

“Bernheim plays an important role in bridging the gap between the scientific community and the general public,”  Bernheim Director of Conservation Andrew Berry said. “Data from Bernheim’s Golden Eagle research contributes to publications like the Conservation Plan for Golden Eagles in Eastern North America, but also helps engage the public in understanding the importance of places like Bernheim for migratory species and wildlife conservation.”

This is the third Golden Eagle Bernheim has tracked, and that includes our favorite eagle Athena.

The eagles come to Kentucky all the way from Canada, and he's headed back there for the summer months.

While in Kentucky he flew over the Parklands of Floyd's Fork, Crestwood, Buckner, and Westport. He crossed the Ohio River and passed over Madison, Indiana and Clifty Falls State Park before staying at the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge for a bit. He traveled back to Kentucky to hunt in Carrolton and visit Owenton before reentering Indiana.

Bernheim officials said Golden Eagles have been flying to the forest for decades to enjoy the forest.
