LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Edgar Harrell served on the USS Indianapolis. In 1945, after delivering parts for the first atomic bomb, it was torpedoed by the Japanese navy, and sank in just 12 minutes. Three-hundred of the sailors and Marines went down with the ship. The other 900 faced shark attacks and exposure. Only 317 survived. Sergeant Harrell says he developed a survivor mindset growing up in Western Kentucky in the Great Depression. Sergeant Edgar Harrel's book, Out of the Depths, is available online.
