LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Louisville native, the late Stephen Garrett, was well on his way to becoming a force in the music industry.
Known as “Static Major”, Garrett was a Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer and a member of local group Playa, that saw success on Billboard’s R&B charts with their singles Don’t Stop the Music and Cheers 2 U.
It was his gift of the pen and production that had music heavy hitters such as Timbaland, Jodeci, Ginuwine and Destiny’s Child calling.
Some of his production credits include Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody” and “Try Again”, Ginuwine’s “Pony”, and Lil’ Wayne’s “Lollipop”, which shot straight to the top of the charts. The 33-year-old died suddenly in February 2008 after being diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder, just weeks before he could see the success of that smash hit.
Static Major is what many locals on the R&B/Hip-Hop music scene call a young Louisville icon.
According to his family, Static Major has hundreds of unreleased songs they plan to unveil during a tribute concert.
The concert will take place Nov. 25 at the Gramercy on Third and Chestnut Streets and will feature special musical guests.
Tickets are $60 and the proceeds will go towards efforts for a hometown banner and plans to start a local music academy in Static Major’s honor.
