Thunder Over Louisville 2024: Indiana side of the river draws many spectators

The annual event kicked off the Derby 150 festivities.

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. — The excitement could be felt throughout the entire Thunder Over Louisville airshow on the other side of the river in Clarksville, Indiana.

The roaring noise of aircraft engines flying high is what excites thousands of spectators.

“I think it is awesome and I love it,” Shane Swaney, who attended Thunder Over Louisville for the first time, said.

For others, it’s the grand finale of fireworks.

John Hammond has been attending for the last 26 years. This time he brought his friend to see one of the nation's largest fireworks shows.

"That’s what this whole thing is about, [the fireworks are] the main thing," Hammond said. "I like it, and he’s never been so it’s fun bringing people who have never experienced this for the first time.”

Dozens of people camped out on the rooftop at Current 812 Apartments.

“This is the best view of Thunder right here out of like the whole city probably,” Isabella Mendoza, apartment resident, said.

Tim Steele is the property manager at the apartment complex that just opened up a few months ago.

“I’m just overwhelmed and feel so good about today," Steele said. "We prepared for this for a very long time, but I’m just so happy to see all of our Denton Floyd employees as well as our residents and their guests all enjoying themselves.”

This airshow tradition even brought some spectators like Megan Jurewicz back home who was visiting from Chicago, Illinois.

“You came down here and you see all of your friends and it was a whole thing," said Jurewicz.

Now she’s bringing her husband and kids.

"It’s just fun," Jurewicz said. "It’s a time for the family just to hang and be outside.”

An overall fun event that will forever be remembered.
