LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Residents on Girard Drive in the Edgewood neighborhood are angry after the post office suspended delivery. The reason? Out of control dogs.
Neighbors said dogs have gotten loose, terrorizing residents and mail carriers. One woman said a certain big white dog often barks and growls at her family as they walk to the car.
"I’ve tried to get my son in the car, to get my son in therapy and such, and and one, a big white dog comes out the big one was barking and growling at me," the neighbor said.
Still, no one knew the attacks had affected their mail until people noticed that no one on the block had gotten their mail for several days. Susan Wright, a spokesperson for USPS, said the temporary suspension was put in place to keep carriers safe.
"Due to a recent dog attack and a past history of dog attacks on the street, USPS has temporarily suspended mail delivery to protect our letter carriers and keep them safe from harm," Wright said. "USPS experienced over 5,700 dog attacks last year and we take this problem very seriously."
Carla Sorantas' dog is at the center of the dispute, but said the dog has not tried to escape and bite neighbors. When asked if Animal Control had reached out, Sorantas did say they had received two letter.
Councilwoman Nicole George's office said they are following up on the matter, hoping to get service restored in a good time frame for concerned neighbors.
USPS officials said mail carriers experienced over 5,700 dog attacks last year, taking the problem of attacks very seriously.
