Local companies having trouble finding qualified candidates

Low unemployment numbers are challenging for employers to fill open positions.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Business is booming within the Commonwealth and that's a good thing. But every growing business needs a growing staff and companies are finding that's easier said than done.

"It makes it challenging from an employer perspective to continue to source and find people that we need to continue to run our operation,” Geneva Stacy said.

Stacy works for Radial, a fulfillment center in western Jefferson County. The business is looking to fill 80 open positions.

"We are really looking for anyone who just has a strong work ethic,” Stacy explained.

From social media ads, to job fairs, recruiters are doing what they can to get qualified candidates through the front door.

Stacy said, "Like other companies at this point, there's a lot of good competition out there so we are continuing to do what we can to market and find people to fill the roles."

It’s the same story for small business.

The Kentucky Small Business Association released a new study this week detailing how profits and potential are rising but the businesses are having trouble filling open positions.

According to the survey, 22 percent of small businesses cite finding qualified workers as their biggest business problem.

The hope now is those workers will find a way to the openings and these businesses will be able to continue to grow.
