JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A judge has ordered mental and physical examinations for a 79-year-old man charged with shooting a state trooper in the head during a December traffic stop in southern Indiana.

The Clark County judge issued the order for Oscar Kays of Jeffersonville, who faces attempted murder and other charges for the Dec. 12 wounding of Trooper Morgenn Evans. The trooper's head was skimmed by a bullet and he was released after a few hours at a hospital.

The News and Tribune reports Kays' defense attorney asked last week for a reduction of his current $1 million bond because of medical issues. His trial is currently scheduled for April.

Police say Kays pulled out a gun and fired as the trooper was trying to handcuff him for possible drunken driving
