Proffitt Report: We're in this together

One thing I believe is that in three weeks, nothing's back to normal. We're still social distancing and staying out of crowds. We must beat the virus the first time.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — WHAS11 Anchor Doug Proffitt shares his commentary on coronavirus in Louisville:

This is the week of the spike. Coronavirus is still on the way up. We're learning that it is now showing up in more people every day. For the next three weeks, we're going to be heading toward the apex.

Will it peak in a mild curve? No one knows. Is our hard work and the early moves by the Kentucky governor to shut things down paying off? It's the hope of our lives right now.

One thing I believe is that in three weeks, nothing's back to normal. We're still social distancing and staying out of crowds. We must beat the virus the first time.

This was also the week of flattening the curve and finding a way to enjoy the precious moments in our lives.

Jerry Rogers threw a COVID-19 surprise birthday party for Debbie, his wife. Going stir crazy, he arranged a drive by of 40 cars coming and going, singing happy birthday as they stood on the porch.

And you have to love the spirit of JCPS teachers organizing car parades to tell their students, “We haven't forgotten you.”

Right now, we're in on a one-sided bargain. We’ve traded physical closeness, hugs and high fives but found other ways to stay in touch. We can't let the virus pry us apart.

We mourn those we've lost with green lights, but by passing the test of the right distance - no spring break, no coronavirus parties - we are saving lives.

It’s not isolation, but it is tough.

Every day I hear the words of my dad, who played football for the great Bear Bryant at UK. The Bear always told them to "suck it up," that they would get through it and it would get better. It always did.
