LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) – On Monday, Feb. 19, Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly talked about protecting America's children from school shootings.
He was in New Albany and said the most basic function of government is to help protect people.
After last week’s school shooting in Florida, Donnelly is calling for a review of why the FBI didn't follow up with tips about the suspected shooter and why mental health professionals didn't flag Nikolas Cruz as a possible threat.
“This has become a situation it was Florida last week it could be Indiana next week it could be Kentucky the next week and our job is to make sure those kids come home safe,” Donnelly said.
Donnelly is calling for universal background checks, he says Congress should be working to make sure the gun laws are the same in every state.
