S. Indiana women creating quilts for crime's youngest victims

Quilts for Love comforts children through the art of quilting.

CLARK COUNTY, Ind. (WHAS11) -- It’s a small dose of kindness going a long way in Southern Indiana for victims of crime. Dozens of women have now joined forces to create Quilts for Love.

Captivating colors create the quilts, built for comfort. On the corner is a message for Southern Indiana's smallest citizens.

"The labels say the person who made this quilt loves you very much," Lisa Ellis said.

That’s a love that is shown throughout the quilting process. The women creating the quilts say they're thinking of those they're intended for as they put them together, and they're thinking of them after they leave their arms as well.

"No one should feel unloved, especially a child," Quilts for Love founder Lisa Ellis said.

Quilts for Love creates the quilts for crime youngest victims. Those who are sometimes left feeling forgotten in the midst of the flashing lights.

The group's founder, Lisa Ellis, made it her mission to serve Southern Indiana's most vulnerable victims.

"You'd see on Facebook and the news and there was usually a kid sitting there going 'what' I thought we need to do something for those kids," Ellis said.

Now the quilts are in the arms of nearly every first responder in Southern Indiana.

Giving away hundreds of quilts, since the group started last year, to those who can use them, like Jeffersonville Police Department's Amber Tharp.

"You know, we can't stop these terrible situations from happening but the fact that we're now able to add some comfort to a terrible situation I think will go a long way," Tharp said.

She said the quilts are packed up inside every patrol car and ready for use as soon as they're needed.

"These quilts will not have a long happy life, they will not always be as beautiful as they are today, due to the situation that might present itself but at that moment, that's when it’s going to county," Tharp said.

That's the hope of those who make them...that in the moments that it matters most, comfort starts with a quilt.
