LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The backside of Churchill Downs is a busy place leading up to the running of the 142nd Kentucky Derby.

Many of the workers who are behind the scenes, had their chance to be treated to a spa day.

Local stylists donated their time to provide free haircuts and styling for the grooms, hot walkers and other track workers.

It’s an effort by the Chaplaincy at Churchill Downs to give back to the workers who don’t get a lot of praise.

“It’s very special. You know it’s a day to be pampered before the rush and crush of all the activities with Derby,” Pat Day, president of the Kentucky Racetrack Chaplaincy Council said.

After their haircuts, backside workers were treated to free massages and lunch from Eat-a-Pita.
