Woman dies in apartment fire in Shawnee neighborhood

A woman is dead after an apartment fire in Louisville Tuesday morning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A woman is dead after an apartment caught fire Tuesday morning in Louisville's Shawnee neighborhood.

At about 7:30 a.m., Louisville Fire Department crews were dispatched to the 3600 block of River Park Drive after the smoke alarm went off in an apartment complex in the area.

Firefighters were on scene within four minutes, according to an LFD news release. Crews worked to extinguish a two-story apartment fire while occupants were still inside.

Firefighters found a woman inside the building and first responders transported her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Crews contained the fire and extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes. The apartment involved sustained moderate fire damage, no other units were damaged.

Kentuckiana Red Cross is assisting displaced occupants. LFD Arson Bureau is investigating.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death of the woman who died in the apartment.
