LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Volunteers found more than trash during cleanups for the 30th annual Ohio River Sweep.
More than 300 volunteers showed up to clean sites along the river. Every year, they discuss what to do if people find dangerous items like needles or broken glass, but this year's volunteers had to call LMPD to retrieve two guns found during the cleanup.
One man said if someone did not know how to handle what he pulled from the river, it could have been deadly. An AK-47 was found at Cox Park, while a loaded handgun was recovered at Eva Bandman Park down the road.
LMPD retrieved the weapons and told WHAS11 they will be checked into evidence. Other than the recovery and speculation, leaders said the cleanup event was safe and successful.
