Snow Squall | Bursts of snow cause problems for drivers in Louisville

The snow team is working through the night to clear the roads.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bursts of snow caused problems for drivers on Louisville roads Friday.

“This weather calls for your full attention,” Brittany Marshall said. WHAS11 caught up with her at a gas station downtown.

Having moved to Kentucky from Minnesota, Marshall is no stranger to this snow.

“Snow squalls can come at a moment's notice,” Jody Meiman, director of Metro Louisville Emergency Services said in Mayor Greg Fischer's livestream Friday afternoon.

Those squalls caused drivers to slide off and get stuck in several areas. One example was the ramp from the Watterson to Newburg Road. Drivers also got stuck on the ramp from the Watterson to I-64.

Right now, it's not too bad,” Marshall said. “It's more so the roads and having to worry about safety issues.”

While Marshall advises everyone to take it slow and be considerate, other drivers like John Harris had this suggestion.

“Stay in the house until it gets better out here,” Harris said. “Salt trucks, wait for them to hit.”

Those salt trucks are out in full force and are working to clear what's already fallen and to prevent any further problems.

“We're looking at it potentially getting colder and we want to make sure we at least get some treatment out there, and we will stay out there tonight,” Metro Public Works Director Vanessa Burns said.

The snow team is working through the night to make sure people can go out and enjoy it through the weekend.

“Since Kentucky really doesn't get that much, it's beautiful so we'll be out making snow angels,” Marshall said.

Emergency Management stressed the importance of putting together an emergency kit for your car with things like snacks, water, and blankets just in case you ever find yourself stuck in the snow.

A Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson said between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. they responded to 80 non-injury crashes and 11 injury crashes.
