Lanes on I-64 to be closed for tunnel cleaning, inspection

You could see slowdowns on the interstate for the next two days as crews inspect the Cochran Hill Tunnels. I-64 will also be closed for two nights next week.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If you take Interstate 64 and travel through the Cochran Hill Tunnels, you could see some traffic delays starting on Thursday. Crews will be cleaning and inspecting the tunnels and lanes will have to be closed during that process.

Cleaning will begin on Thursday. The right lane of I-64E will be closed from 9 a.m. until noon, and the right westbound lane will be closed from noon until 3 p.m. Crews will work in the left lane on Friday following that same schedule: eastbound closed from 9 a.m. until noon, westbound closed from noon until 3 p.m. Only one lane will be closed at a time.

Next week, both lanes of I-64 will be closed for two nights during the tunnel inspection. I-64 East will be closed beginning at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21 and will reopen by 5 a.m. on Wednesday. If you're traveling on I-64 East during that closure, you will be redirected off Grinstead Drive (Exit 8) to Lexington Road to Cannons Lane to get back on I-64.

I-64 West will be shut down from 11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 until 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 23. If you're traveling on I-64 West, you will need to follow the detour from Cannons Lane (Exit 10) to Lexington Road to Grinstead Drive to get back onto the interstate westbound.

The work could be delayed or rescheduled if inclement weather or other delays occur. You can visit goky.ky.gov for any traffic or travel updates.
