LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The British Open tees off in two weeks 18 and a Louisville Cardinal will be part of the field.

University of Louisville sophomore golfer Matthias Schmid won the European Amateur Championship on Saturday, earning him a spot in this year’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Schmid came into the final round with a two-shot lead and ended up winning the tournament by three strokes.

"I can't believe that right now, I haven't played in any high-level professional events, so to have this as my first one, it's unbelievable," Schmid told Louisville Athletics. "I didn't make many mistakes which was the key."

The British Open begins on July 18.
