LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- A recanvass will take place in the district judge's race won by Daniel Alvarez.

Alvarez died hours after Tuesday's primary.

A spokesman for Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes reports that late Friday afternoon, the third-place finisher in that race, Karen Faulkner, requested election workers double-check totals from precincts.

The recanvass will take place next Thursday, May 31, at 9 a.m.

Faulkner finished 17 votes behind Tanisha Hickerson.

By law, the top two candidates in the 9th division district judge's race would compete on the General Election ballot.

Since Alvarez passed away, the second-place finisher will be the only name on the ballot this fall.
