Walden students help choose names for new LMPD K-9

LMPD has a new K-9 and students helped choose names which the public will be able to vote for at a later date.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Metro Police are adding a new addition to the force.

Officials say they’ve added a new K-9, a Belgian Malinois, which has yet to be named.

The new K-9 made his rounds at Walden Elementary School where students helped the Louisville Metro Police Foundation come up with a list of names.

LMPD will then narrow the list down to 5 names, which they expect to do on Nov. 16.

The public will be able to vote for the name at a later date.

Local alarm company Sonitrol is helping pay for the animal and his training.

“There are a lot of things that unfortunately are just not able to be covered in the police budget and we've had several of our canines retire this year and we unfortunately lost one of them earlier this year and so trying to keep up and replace those dogs is very difficult and it's not always found in the budget,” Tracie Texas Shugart, Executive Director, Louisville Metro Police Foundation, said.
