LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – As the spirit of volunteering has taken over the city, the Build-a-Bed event at Meyzeek Middle School kicked off Mayor Greg Fischer’s 5th Annual Give a Day Week of Service.

The purpose of the project was to build 100 beds for Jefferson County Public School students.

More than 13,000 children are homeless during each school year in Jefferson County. For most children this means either sleeping on a couch, or more often, on the floor.

“We know that students that have a good night of rest and a place to call their own will be better able to concentrate on learning. The most important things is we also have student helping this week – they’re learning how to give back,” Superintendent Donna Hargens said.

The event was just one of many projects planned for the week of giving which runs through April 24.

The Give a Day goal is to break Louisville’s record from 2015 of more than 165,000 volunteers and acts of compassion.
