LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – They’re rolling up their sleeves getting back to work, despite a major setback for the volunteers at Eastern Cemetery, which sits next to Cave Hill in the Highlands.

“In the last year we've purchased a lot of equipment and to have it stolen like that...it's heartbreaking,” Andy Harpole, Friends of Eastern Cemetery, said.

A major theft, more than $20,000 worth of equipment stolen out of a garage – tractors, lawnmowers and the list continues.

“So they came around to the front here and this was the padlock that was holding the door shut and they took bolt cutters and cut it off,” Harpole said.

There are no surveillance cameras here to record the thieves. All of the equipment has either been donated or bought with fundraised money. Harpole believes the people who did this knew what was in that garage.

“They were prepared for this. Whoever did it knew what they were doing,” Harpole said.

But Harpole says this won't stop him and the other volunteers from doing the work they love.

“I'm not sure what's we're going to do but what we will do is rebuild,” he said.

Volunteers say they believe the theft happened sometime between Sunday evening and this morning.

WHAS11 asked LMPD about this case.

They say they cannot confirm they are investigating tonight but told us they would get back with us on Wednesday.
