Student newspaper raises money in legal battle against UK

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WHAS11) – The University of Kentucky is continuing their legal fight against the independent student newspaper, The Kentucky Kernel.

The paper submitted an open records request in a sexual assault and harassment case allegedly involving a professor.

UK denied their request, so students appealed to the attorney general Andy Beshear.

Beshear ruled in favor of the student newspaper but the university has appealed.

The Kentucky Kernel is looking to raise $15,000 to go toward their legal bills and continue their fight.

“This isn’t just about you know – this one case. This is about everything UK does and it’s about all of us holding them accountable, not just here in the newsroom at the Kernel, but all media outlets and everybody that wants to open an open records request,” McKenna Horsley, editor, said.

In just two days, the Kernel’s GoFundMe account has already reached nearly $7,000.
