Shelters open for those without power in Kentucky, Indiana

Shelters in both states have opened for those who are still affected by the power outage.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Thousands are left without power after an ice storm passed through Kentucky and Indiana.

Crews are working diligently to restore service, but due to the large number of customers without service, it is taking some time. There is no estimate on when power will be restored to all.

Shelters in both states have opened for those who are still affected by the power outage.

In Kentucky, an emergency shelter is located at the UAW Local 862 Hall at 3000 Fern Valley Rd. which opened at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Louisville Metro Emergency Services at 502-574-3900.

Indiana has an emergency shelter located at the Salvation Army of New Albany at 2300 Green Valley Rd. which will open at 7 p.m. Use the gym entrance for access to the shelter. For more information, contact Clark County Emergency Management Agency at 812-246-5538.

Operation White Flag is coordinated by the Coalition for the Homeless and goes into effect when the wind chill is at 35 degrees or below. To find out when Operation White Flag is in effect, call 637-2337. Operation White Flag shelters are as follows: St. Vincent de Paul (for men only at 1034 S. Jackson St.), Salvation Army Center for Hope (911 S. Brook St.) and Wayside Christian Mission (432 E. Jefferson St.).
