MT.WASHINGTON, Ky.(WHAS 11)--Kentucky lawmaker Dan Johnson who has been under investigation for allegedly molesting a woman has taken his own life.
Authorities in Bullitt County are saying he killed himself after posting what appears to be a suicide note on his Facebook page around 5 or 6 p.m. Wednesday. That post has been taken down.
The Bullitt Co. Sheriff Donnie Tinnell confirms that Johnson shot himself on the Greenwell Ford Bridge in Mt. Washington. The coroner also confirmed on Dec. 14 Johnson's death was a suicide.
According to the sheriff's department, Johnson drove his SUV to the bridge, got out of the vehicle and shot himself with a handgun.
This comes just one day after Johnson held a news conference saying he would not step down in light of a report by the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting that included claims Johnson molested a woman when she was a teenager.
That report came out on Dec.11.
The church where he had a devoted following by all accounts according to the most recent report from the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, described a man who was able to get people into the pews that wouldn't normally go to church, but that report also laid out a strong allegation of molestation.
Officers working the scene say these kinds of cases are always heartbreaking.
Johnson's Facebook post said:
"911 20001 PTSD 24/7......16 years is a sickness that will take my life. I cannot handle it any longer. It has won this life. But heaven is my home.
It goes on to say -PS I love my friends you are family. God loves all people know matter what."
Gov. Matt Bevin tweeted out the following:
Rep. David Osborne sent the following statement: "It is with great sadness that we have received confirmed reports of the passing of Rep. Dan Johnson this evening. Please keep his family in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time."
