Top items you'll need to build your at-home severe weather emergency kit

Using information from FEMA, local emergency services, here is a list of items you need to have ahead of any storm.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Spring and summer bring everything when it comes to weather. That's why it's important that you build and keep an at-home emergency survivor kit. It's something you that will come in handy, useful during severe weather any time of the year.

Using information from FEMA, local emergency services, WHAS11 News has put together this list of items you need to have ahead of any storm.

Main items to have in your kit

  • Flashlight(s)
  • Extra batteries
  • Cell phone with chargers and backup batteries
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Cash at least enough for a week. Credit card readers, ATMs are impacted by power outages.
  • Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation)
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and an NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle (to signal for help)
  • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place)
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Local maps
