Police plead for community’s help after recent violence in Louisville: ‘It has to stop’

Police are asking Louisville residents to take a few simple steps to help prevent more violence.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After multiple incidents of violence in the past few weeks, Louisville Metro Police are seeking the community’s help to prevent more shootings and homicides. According to Lieutenant Emily McKinley, officers and detectives have been "overwhelmed" by the violence.

“It has to stop,” McKinley said.

Many of the recent shootings in Louisville have been drive-by shootings. Police believe these crimes have been committed by young people in stolen vehicles, and some of the weapons used were inside of those vehicles.

“We don’t want your car or your gun to be the next tool used in a homicide or a shooting,” McKinley said.

Police are asking Louisville residents to take a few simple steps:

  • Lock your vehicle
  • Secure your weapons
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Parents should beware of their child’s social media activity and take posts about guns, gangs, drugs and threats seriously

“I do not want to have to notify another parent of the murder of their son or their daughter,” McKinley said.
