LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — Local police continued their Christmas tradition Saturday, bringing smiles to the children of Portland for the 43rd year in a row.
The LMPD 1st Division Police Auxiliary hosted children and their families at Molly Leonard Community Center, passing out presents and giving children the chance to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus.
"Once again the Auxiliary has gone above and beyond the call of helping those in need in our community," Councilman David James said. "Like the men and women who protect us in the 1st Division, they have shown us how they care for those in who would not otherwise have a special holiday."
Michael Abernathy, a district resource officer for the 1st Division, said the event has continued to grow every year, and gives residents and officers a chance to meet a spread cheer.
"To present some unity is always huge, so we look forward to these opportunities to make us feel good and to help people in the area feel good as well," Abernathy said.
Every child that attended the Christmas party received a toy, fruit, candy, toboggan and gloves.
