People posing as Louisville Water employees are calling customers and trying to enter homes

Louisville Water is warning customers to be cautious after receiving reports of scams.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — People posing as Louisville Water employees are calling customers demanding payments and some are even trying to enter customers' homes.

Louisville Water is warning customers to be on high alert after receiving reports of scams. Vice President of Communications at Louisville Water, Kellie Smith said this week a customer received a phone call from a fake employee demanding payment or they'd turn their water off.

Smith said earlier this year others took it as far as showing up to people's homes posing as a Louisville Water employee and asking customers if they can come inside for inspection.

"Louisville Water's work is outside your home, we're not coming inside to do any kind of work and we always have identification," Smith said.

She said they will never ask for credit card information over the phone. Customers should get a bill explains all the ways a payment could be made.

"Sometimes pipes break so if we have a water main break we could be outside your house or perhaps we're doing service work in the area and there was a problem on your street," Smith said.

If Louisville Water shows up, Smith said double check and confirm they have an ID. Employees should have on clothing that has the company's logo and oftentimes they wear safety vests with the 'W' on the back. Drivers will have markings on their vehicles.

If you sense anything suspicious, Smith said call Louisville Water or police.
