Louisville woman honored for courage in Larry Nassar scandal

Rachel Denhollander was given the Inspiration of the Year Award for her courage in being the first athlete to publicly accuse USA Gymnastics Dr. Larry Nassar of sexual assault

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — Rachel Denhollander was awarded for her courage in being the first athlete to publicly accuse USA Gymnastics Dr. Larry Nassar of sexual assault.

Denhollander was given the Inspiration of the Year Award at this year's Sports Illustrated Awards for inspiring hundreds of her fellow survivors to end their silence and change the world of gymnastics and beyond.

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford introduced Denhollander as the award-winner via video saying, "I am honored to speak with you from afar about a woman I admire so much, a woman who suffered abuse as a vulnerable teenage athlete, who found the courage to talk publicly to stop the abuse of others."

Since Denhollander's lawsuit, more than 300 women have come forward against Nassar, who was sentenced to up to 175 years on state charges of sexual assault, in addition to federal charges.
