Light Up Louisville 2018 plans announced; ice skating axed

A 38-year tradition continues with one exception this year -- no ice skating.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – It will be a lot like Christmas around the city.

Officials announced plans for this year’s Light Up Louisville.

There will be different things happening during the event but plans for ice skating this year have been axed.

Officials told WHAS11 News the vendor who built the temporary rink at Fourth and Jefferson Streets decided not to do it this year but is eyeing a different location in the future.

Despite the move, locals love the 38-year-old tradition.

Festivities will begin on Nov. 23 at 4 p.m.

Santa’s Workshop will be set up at Fifth and Jefferson Streets with a vendor village one block over.

The event will have a free train ride for children.

The evening will close out with the Lots of Lights parade, followed by a visit with Santa arriving at 8 p.m.

Santa will help Mayor Greg Fischer light up the city's Christmas tree located in Jefferson Square.

The tree was donated from the property of Christ Church United Methodist on Brownsboro Road.
