LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Kosair Children's Hospital is improving spinal care for local children thanks to a generous donation.

An anonymous donor gave $2.5 million in honor of Dr. Rolando Puno, who is an orthopedic spine surgeon at Norton Leatherman Spine Center.

The donation will be used to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and hire additional specialists.

As a result, the surgical services unit at Kosair Children's Hospital will be named after Dr. Puno.

The experts at Kosair see more than 12,000 children each year with orthopedic and spine conditions children like baseball star, Adam Duvall.

The Butler High School baseball player needed spine surgery after a fracture and had a special message for his surgeon today saying in part, “I would like to congratulate Dr. Puno and Kosair Children's Hospital for their generous gift and thank them for helping others like me live better lives.”

Duvall went on to play ball for the University of Louisville and now he’s an outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds.

The anonymous donation is the latest in a series of large gifts for Kosair Children's Hospital.

Last month, the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation donated $2 million.
