Kentucky malls, retail stores reopen

People can finally go inside their favorite stores to shop starting May 20.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — After months of curbside shopping, Kentucky retail stores can finally open their doors to customers May 20.

Like so many other business owners, Garwood Linton of Red Tree said they have been making several changes to prepare for customers to walk through their doors.

"We have two counters: one for product that people are going to purchase where someone will bag it, and another one where people are going to pay," Linton said. "And where they're going to pay we have a big plexi glass."

Hand sanitizer is spaced throughout the store, while Xs mark six feet apart on the floor. Red Tree has masks, gloves and even an air filtration system at the check-out counter.

"I think that once people come in and they see the precautions we're taking, they'll be a lot more comfortable," Linton said.

All stores will look somewhat different as they rearrange to meet state health guidelines, and Kentucky malls have also been working to welcome customers back.

Both Oxmoor and Mall St. Matthews will allow shoppers in its retail stores at a 33% capacity. Food courts will be open only for carry-out until they can open Friday at 33% capacity.

"New measures have been implemented to help ensure the health and safety for all who enter the malls, including hand-sanitizing stations, touch-free interactions, frequent and intense cleanings and social distancing directions," the group that manages both malls said in a statement.

Jefferson Mall also reopens Wednesday, keeping its food court seating, children's play area, and all drinking fountains closed. Fitting rooms may also be closed at most stores during the reopen.

Owners of retail business big and small are all hoping customers will feel safe and want to experience real, in-person shopping once again.

"It's really not the same when you're shopping online versus coming in and experiencing," Linton said.
