LEXINGTON, Ky. — Andy Beshear says Kentucky needs to diversify its energy production and says that climate change "is real" as three Democrats running for governor delved into the future of coal in Appalachia during a televised debate.
The candidates were asked if coal production has a future in eastern Kentucky during their debate Wednesday night.
Former state Auditor Adam Edelen said he's at the forefront of creating a new economy by developing a solar power project on a former Appalachian coal mine.
House Minority Floor Leader Rocky Adkins says the coal industry will continue to exist but not at the past levels. Adkins says he has a vision to rebuild the state's rural economy.
Beshear also promoted his plan to expand gambling and use the proceeds to help fund the state's struggling public pension systems.
