IMS has announced events planned for Fourth of July weekend at the track will go on without fans in the stands due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are three races slotted for the big NASCAR-IndyCar double-header weekend: the GMR Grand Prix (NTT IndyCar Series), the Pennzoil 150 (NASCAR Xfinity Series), and the Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard (NASCAR Cup Series).

"While we certainly worked diligently to run our events with spectators, we reached a point where we needed to make a final decision because the race weekend is less than a month away," said Penske Entertainment Corp. President & CEO Mark Miles said. "Today it's not possible to be confident that Indianapolis will be at Stage 5 of the state's reopening plan by the Fourth of July weekend."

While Indiana's current reopening plan allows most of the state to enter Stage 5 starting July 4 — when sporting events are permissible — Marion County is on a delayed plan due to its population size.

Miles said Penske Entertainment Corp. remains committed to hosting spectators at the 2020 Indianapolis 500, which was rescheduled to Aug. 23.

Indiana University Athletics is beginning the process of returning groups of its students who compete in intercollegiate athletics to campus for voluntary workouts. IU Athletics said those workouts would start June 15.

“We cannot totally eliminate the risk,” said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. “At least until there is a vaccine, there will be risk. What we can do is have the best doctors give us the best protocols and make sure they are strictly followed. That’s what we’ve done and what we are going to do.”

IU is taking advice from IU Athletics Medical Advisory and is in Phase 1 of the restart.

The students’ returns will be staggered and include a reintegration phase before any student is able to participate in voluntary workouts at Indiana University athletic facilities.
