Hands-on training for a mock train crash scenario

It was a mock scenario but the live exercise was meant to help train emergency crews on what to do if they encounter a real life situation.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A train jumps the tracks in Jeffersonville on Tuesday morning and first responders rush to the scene.

It was a mock scenario but the live exercise was meant to help train emergency crews on what to do if they encounter a real life situation.

The live training centered on a mock tank car emergency involving a train. Crews had to respond to an incident of a chemical leak and hazmat situation.

The training exercise was conducted by the Clark County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) with local emergency responders from Jeffersonville and Clarksville Fire and Police Departments and other state and federal agencies.

The effort is sponsored by the Louisville & Indiana Railroad in partnership with CSX.

The exercise is designed to teach first responders how rail cars work and how to respond to incidents involving trains.

Taught by CSX hazardous materials specialists and specialized contractors, the training provides first responders with the information they need to be safe around active railroads including unique safety features of modern rail tank cars and specialized techniques for responding to railroad incidents involving hazardous materials.
