Washington County, IN — Indiana State Police are still investigating the death of a six-year-old girl after she was accidentally shot in the head Friday night.

According to ISP, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department received a 9-1-1 call from a home on South PD Baker Road near Salem. They were told a six-year-old female had been shot in the head. When deputies arrived on the scene, the child was transported by air ambulance to the Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Shortly upon arrival at the hospital, the child, identified as Makayla Bowling, was pronounced dead.

Police say that during their preliminary investigation they learned that the child's father was cleaning a handgun inside the residence and thought it was unloaded. The firearm discharged striking the child.

This case is still under investigation, however, at this time, Indiana State Police Detectives do not feel as though foul play was involved.
