FEMA warns of scams preying on people needing federal assistance

"If you're hesitant at all, you should call FEMA and just double check to make sure those disaster survivor assistance teams are truly in their neighborhood."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS) -- FEMA is warning people in disaster areas of potential scams.

FEMA has set up a disaster recovery center (DRC) in Utica, Indiana, at the Utica Town Hall, and has also set up a roving DRC in Corydon, Indiana, which will be at the Harrison County Government Center for the next three days. FEMA workers will be at the DRCs helping people register and file for federal assistance.

FEMA also has survivor disaster assistance teams going to affected neighborhoods registering people for FEMA aid. According to FEMA spokesperson Jann Tracey, there have not been any reported scams in Southern Indiana at this time, but people should still be alert.

"There are ways people can protect themselves," Tracey said. "If someone knocks at your door, the first thing you do is look for a badge. Make sure that they have a federal government badge."

Tracey said FEMA will also not ask for bank account information on the initial visit.
