LEXINGTON, Ky. — Republican Gov. Matt Bevin and his Democratic challenger, Andy Beshear, wrangled over their support for public education in a high-stakes debate coming three weeks before their election showdown.

During Tuesday night's debate, Beshear touted his plan to provide a $2,000 across-the-board pay raise for public school teachers. Bevin responded that education needs to be funded but criticized Beshear's teacher pay raise proposal as "Andy Candy."

The debate turned personal when Bevin called Beshear a "fraud" in stressing public education, noting that Beshear's children attend private school. Beshear responded that he supports his children and would never attack Bevin's children.
