LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A five-year-old boy died Friday after he was struck by a pick-up truck near Victoria Gardens Apartments in Okolona.

Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said the boy was riding his bicycle in the 300 block of Whispering Brook Drive when the incident happened. It appeared the driver of the pick-up did not see the child as he turned onto Quiet Wood Court, Mitchell said.

Officers escorted the ambulance to Kosair Children’s Hospital but the child succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving.

“This is a very tragic incident involving a child so young and for the person driving the vehicle who unfortunately just did not see him,” Mitchell said.

Neighbors said the man driving the truck was a maintenance worker at the apartment complex.

Joyce Depoyster said the man was visibly distraught following the accident. She took the man a chair and tried to comfort him. “He was crying and everything. It was so sad,” Depoyster said.

Neighbors said the child lived at the apartment complex and could often be seen riding his bicycle through the neighborhood.

“I can only imagine what the parents are going through right now,” Samantha Deplata said.

LMPD’s Traffic Unit is investigating the accident. The victim has not been identified.
