$2K goes to planting trees downtown to help tree canopy

Efforts are being made to improve the tree canopy in downtown Louisville.

LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- In their mission to establish a robust tree canopy in the city, Trees Louisville accepted donations from community groups to break ground on a new project.

JBS Foods handed out a check of $2,000 and with other funds from Plumbers Supply, White Clay, and the PTA at Lincoln Elementary. Trees Louisville said they are going to start planting in front of the elementary school to create a beautiful and sustainable environment in the downtown area.

Trees Louisville says downtown has a tree canopy of about 8 percent, which they say is low.

The group hopes to reach a goal of 45 percent in the decades to come. to reduce the heat produced by human activity in the metro area.
