LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Are fire extinguishers required in Louisville businesses? You'd think the answer would be simple, but it’s not.

In fact, it’s so complicated not even the Louisville Fire chief could give a straight answer, when WHAS11 asked him the day after a fire at a strip mall near St. Matthews.

WHAS11 also reached out to the Public Protection Cabinet, another Kentucky fire chief and a local fire marshal.

The fire marshal said it is a common misconception that not every business is required to have one.

The local fire chief said it depends on the size of the business and the type, like what they do or sell inside.
