Henry Winkler stops by WHAS11 before Louisville Supercon

The pop culture icon discusses his recent Emmy win, his newest children's books and this weekend's event

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Louisville Supercon, the annual festival celebrating comics, superheroes, science fiction, cartoons, video games and all things entertainment, kicks off at the Kentucky International Convention Center Friday and runs through Sunday, December 2. Among the celebrity attendees is Henry Winkler, who stopped by WHAS to discuss his career, his recent Emmy win and this weekend’s event.

Winkler, now 73, rose to prominence as Arthur Fonzarelli, the lovable greaser in the 1970s sitcom Happy Days. Despite that show's success and memorable roles since then, it wasn’t until this year that the pop culture icon snagged his first Emmy for his work on the new HBO series Barry, in which he stars as an acting coach alongside melancholy assassin Bill Hader.

Winkler says he was blown away by his Emmy win and explains that despite the seemingly outlandish premise of Barry—an assassin turned actor navigates the Los Angeles acting scene—it taps into something everybody feels: the desire to be someone else.

In addition to his work as an actor, Winkler is also an accomplished children’s author, with two new books coming out in 2019. The books center around Hank Zipzer, a schoolboy with dyslexia dubbed “The World’s Greatest Underachiever.” Winkler, who also has dyslexia, spoke about what it means to write for children who are having similar experiences with dyslexia and how he encourages them to realize the greatness inside them.

Winkler will be meeting fans all weekend at Louisville Supercon and encourages everybody to come out. He says that the process of making movies and television shows can be isolating, so the opportunity to meet fans face to face is a welcome one.

Louisville Supercon runs November 30 through December 2 at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Tickets and more information can be found at louisvillesupercon.com.
