Combat the 'summer slide' with these educational resources

The Kentucky Department of Education offers literacy and mathematics resources as well as meal options to keep kids fed during the summer.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The school year is coming to an end and as students transition from NTI days to summer break, Kentucky educators want to make sure children stay engaged.

The Kentucky Department of Education has partnered with The Children’s Reading Foundation and the Summer Food Service Program to keep students from falling behind and experiencing the “summer slide.” Many younger students can lose up to 3 months of reading skills during the summer months if they don’t practice what they learn during the school year.

To help combat this issue, KDE has launched a Summer Support website, which includes educational resources for students and parents, as well as information on summer feeding programs.

The educational resources on the site focus on literacy and mathematics and include programs from KET and PBS. While many lessons are aimed toward younger students, there are resources for teenagers and older students as well such as audiobooks. The website also features a Virtual Read Aloud Series and links to local school and library summer programs.

The KDE website also provides links to the state’s Summer Food Service Program, which helps provide breakfasts, lunches, snacks and suppers for any student who needs them. The program provides nearly 3 million meals to Kentucky students every year. You can learn more about the program here.
