LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A man has been arrested in connection with Louisville's latest homicide that happened on Friday morning when a man was found dead in a Taylor Berry neighborhood backyard. Michael E. Doertch, Jr., 33, has been charged with the murder of Billy Michael Garland.

Garland was found in the 3300 block of Taylor Boulevard, not far from Churchill Downs.

Jonathan garland, the victim’s nephew, said, "He was a good man, he had a big heart, and he would've done anything for anybody. I just don't really know what else to say at the moment."

The family, now left speechless after learning their loved one was discovered dead in the backyard behind his apartment.

Police were called to the house around 9:30 a.m. when a neighbor found him badly beaten and unresponsive. Upon arriving, officials said they noticed obvious signs foul play and called in the homicide unit.

LMPD’s Dwight Mitchell said, "We don't know exactly what's the cause of death, obviously that will be pending an autopsy from the coroner.”

Jonathan Garland said the victim was his uncle, Billy Michael Garland. He was in his 50’s and had one daughter.

His nephew said Billy Michael Garland moved to the metro area for support less than a year ago, after losing his spouse. Since then family told WHAS11 he's struggled with addiction.

"Everybody in our family has tried to help him, we've all pretty much exhausted our resources- financially, emotionally," Jonathan Garland said.

But family said things were finally coming together for Billy Michael Garland and he didn't deserve to die.
