Man arrested, charged with attempted murder of officer after Fern Creek shooting

Police say a traffic encounter turned into an officer-involved shooting on Bardstown Road leaving the suspect and officer injured early Tuesday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – An 18-year-old is facing attempted murder charges of an officer following a traffic incident turned shooting involving police early Tuesday.

According to Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad, Officers Patrick Dahlgren and Trevor Troutman approached a vehicle at Bardstown Road and Cedarlook Drive around 1:45 a.m. with DeCedric Binford inside.

As officers approached the vehicle, they allegedly saw and smelled marijuana.

After questioning Binford, police say he reached for a gun and allegedly fired shots at officers.

Police say they got into a brief struggle with him, but Binford ran off and fired more shots in their direction.

Police returned fire, hitting Binford.

Officer Dahlgren was grazed by a bullet to the shoulder and is out of the hospital. Binford’s injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Chief Conraid said the shooting officer’s body camera didn’t capture the beginning of the incident but the assisting officer caught the remaining footage of the incident.

Dahlgren and Troutman have been with the department since February 2018. Both have been placed on administrative reassignment, according to Conrad.

Binford is also facing fleeing and evading and trafficking marijuana.
