LMPD: Child shot, killed by another child

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Police are looking for answers after a child was accidentally shot and killed by another child Sunday.

Police responded to a residence in the 3000 block of Penway Avenue in the Hallmark neighborhood just before 12:30 p.m.

When police arrived on the scene, they located a male juvenile deceased from a gunshot wound. The coroner has identified the victim as Tremain Brown, Jr. He was 12-years-old.

According to their preliminary investigation, police said the victim’s brother accidentally shot him. LMPD said it doesn’t anticipate the brother will be charged in this case.

Neighbors said they are hurting for the family. They just saw Brown walking around the street on Saturday.

“The last time I seen him was on my corner. He was with his brothers. They were riding their bikes and scooters and stuff, eating popsicles, running up and down the street with each other,” neighbor Tony Smith said. “It’s sad, but I don’t know what’s going to happen to the family after this.”

“It’s just a hurting thing, you know. It’s just a hurting thing right now especially a little kid, 12 years old,” neighbor Saundra Anthony said.

Neighbors described Brown as the epitome of a polite and good kid. They said the same thing could be said for his three brothers.

“Nice kid, real nice kid, all of her children. Yes ma’am, no ma’am, hi Ms. Sandy, yep,” Anthony said.

Neighbors said they’re still in shock, but hope Brown’s tragic death will send a simple, but powerful message.

“If adults is going to have guns in the house, have gun locks, safety boxes, put it somewhere where it can’t be open. Don’t just leave it laying around on the coffee table. I mean, if little boys see a gun, they’re going to want to pick that gun up,” Smith said.

The Homicide Unit is investigating and is determining where the shooter got the weapon from.
