'Spirit of Giving' Southern Indiana restaurant donates Sunday sales to struggling small businesses impacted by COVID-19

"I just hope that out of the spirit of giving, we can try to save as many as we can."

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Just like many other small business owners, the owners of Chicago City Pizza in New Albany are working to keep the bills paid amid the statewide shut down.

"We don't have a lot of money in the bank account I can tell you that," said John Stamper.

But Stamper and his wife Renee are also working to lend a helping hand to other small business owners.

"Giving is very contagious," said Stamper. "I just hope that out of the spirit of giving, we can try to save as many as we can. A lot of small businesses aren't looking for loans. They don't want loans. Their ability to make money was taken away from them."

So Stamper came up with an idea to help.

"I've got a better way," he said. "Lets make some pizzas and get ourselves out of this mess."

He and his wife decided to donate all the money they earn on Sundays to a struggling small business. That includes food sales and tips.

The couple just started the first Sunday in April, and on the first day were able to donate more than $2,200 to a family in need in southern Indiana. They plan to continue through the month, and possibly longer.

There is a catch though.

"If you want the money you just have to come down here and work the window to see all your customers, and the other person has to come in the back and help me make the pizzas and do dishes," said Stamper.

But Stamper said for fellow business owners, that's a small price to pay.

"They're not looking for any special treatment, they're just looking for a way out of this mess," he said.

He hopes to send a message of hope, and work together to keep small businesses alive through the pandemic. All while keeping faith in the greater good.

"If I can do my part... God will take care of all the rest of it, that's the way I believe," he said.
