LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) – On this St. Paddy's Day, local freshmen got to take home their own greenery to help contribute to Louisville's tree canopy.
After a study in 2017, done by the Louisville Urban Tree Canopy Assessment, showed Louisville Metro was losing 54,000 trees a year, the organization is initiating a tree giveaway to every high school freshman in Jefferson County.
“This is very important because trees are what give us life and they're what help us breathe and it's very important to have enough because not only does it look amazing when you have a city with a lot of trees but it's also extremely beneficial for your health,” Zoe Blake, a Sacred Heart freshman, said.
The students got to choose between beach trees, birch trees, and walnut trees.
