LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – As cold weather begins to make its way into Kentuckiana, Louisville Metro Animal Services is asking the public to check under their hoods before starting their engines.

Officials say animals are drawn to the engine’s warmth when temperatures drop.

The advisory comes just days after a small cat was found on Twin Oaks Drive severely burned from an engine and needed medical treatment.

According to LMAS, a man told an animal control officer he turned on his engine and saw fur flying. When he opened his car hood, he found the cat.

Officials say that cat, named Irene, was skinned on one side from the hot engine and suffered multiple cuts on her nose.

Due to the cat’s injuries, officials said one of her eyes had to be removed.

Irene is now on the mend and is now available for adoption through Animal House Adoption Center.

Drivers are encouraged to check under the hood and bang on their vehicle to scare away stray cats or other small animals.

If you see a pet without any proper shelter from the weather conditions, dial (502) 473-PETS or call MetroCall at 311.
