Norton 'family' steps up for former coworker after stroke

Colleagues of Radcliffe have raised $11,000 after he suffered a stroke. He retired after 25 years at Norton Hospital.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Norton Healthcare workers are coming together to help one of their own after a stroke earlier this month.

Mike Radcliffe worked as a surgical technician at Norton Hospital for 25 years, and chose to retire early after COVID-19 hit Kentucky.

Six days later, he had a stroke.

“I thought I had a pretty good plan to work things out and just go on and take an early retirement, and that's just how life goes you can't really predict what's going to happen to you,” Radcliffe explained.

He lost vision in his left eye. He also lost his insurance when he resigned.

“It was just kind of heartbreaking to hear that after everything he went through, here's another thing,” said Chris Huffer, who works as a surgical nurse at Norton Hospital.

Colleagues including Richard Higdon and Terry Sivori started a Go Fund Me Page, and have been able to raise over $11,000 so far.

“We all love each other, we're a big family and we're going to make whatever we can do happen,” said Huffer.

One of Radcliffe’s coworkers, by the name Shelita Thomas, made enough calls and sent enough text messages to raise $1500 alone.

“It's hard to even express how grateful I am and how thankful I am,” said Radcliffe. “I'm just so grateful to have the kind of friends, and those people who are putting their life on the line every day to worry so much about me.”

Radcliffe said he is starting to regain sight in his left eye, but the compassion from his coworkers is something he sees clearly.

“This kind of expression of unselfish giving, it's inspiring.”
