Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) – Fans have been begging for McDonald’s to bring back the limited-edition Szechuan Sauce since an episode of Rick and Morty aired in 2017. The company resurrected the sauce briefly in a move that would end in disaster. Now, as if using a portal gun to an alternate dimension, McDonald’s is making up for it.
On Monday, Feb. 26, Szechuan Sauce will be available across all US McDonald’s restaurants. 20 million packets have been shipped in anticipation of the popularity for this promotion.
Szechuan Sauce was originally released in 1998 as a promotional tool for the upcoming release of Disney’s “Mulan.” It was a popular sauce at the time, but since the character Rick mentioned during the season three premiere, interest has piqued.
In a rant that climaxed with screaming he’d find the sauce even if it takes nine seasons, Rick said what all Szechuan Sauce fans were thinking: we must find the sauce. It didn’t take nine seasons. Fans demanded it, and in October 2017, McDonald’s delivered the sauce.
Well, sort of.
The company brought the sauce back for one day only at participating locations. They didn’t anticipate the demand, and the promotion brought dishonor on them (dishonor on their family, dishonor on their cow). Customers lined up hours before the sauce would be available, and shortly after the promotion began, most locations had run through their limited supply.
Outraged, fans took to social media to vent their frustration. Not even two hours after the official release of the sauce, McDonald’s posted an apology on twitter.
The tweet was followed with a press release the following day, announcing there would be a second release. Since then, the official date has been announced as February 26. Like before, the sauce will be given out only with qualifying purchases and while supplies last.
In addition to the rerelease, McDonald’s has partnered with Studio@Gizmodo and Onion Labs to produce, ‘The Sauce,’ a three-part-series exploring the stranger-than-fiction saga of Szechuan Sauce. You can check out the series at the website McDonald’s built in honor of the sauce.
